Indian cricket officials and players to discuss match fixing

NEW DELHI, APR 26 (AP) - Cricket's top executive will hold a meeting Thursday with administrators, the sports minister, some politicians and past and current captains to discuss the recent match fixing scandal involving former South African captain Hansie

Cronje.

     

Cricket was jolted this month when Indian police charged Cronje and three teammates with fraud, conspiracy, and deceiving and defrauding spectators. An Indian bookie and a film actor were arrested for involvement in match fixing and betting which, though illegal in India, involves money running into millions of dollars.

Premier Division Cricket suspended till April 29

April 27, 2000    

 

Dhaka, Apr 26 (UNB) – All the matches of the Janakantha Metropolis Premier Division Cricket League have been further suspended till April 29 (Saturday) due to inclement weather. 

The league, which was postponed for three-days on Monday last, will resume on April 30 (Sunday) and the fixture will be bodily shifted, said a CCDM a press release today (Wednesday).

Ganguly allowed to skip brainstorming session

The Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has been 'excused' from attending the April 27 meeting that the Union Minister of State for Sports Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa has called in New Delhi.

Dhaka, Apr 24 (UNB) – Bangladesh Cricket Board initially picked up 25 players today (Monday) to form a national team for the four-nation 7th Pepsi Asia Cup Cricket 2000 beginning in Dhaka May 28. 

Hosts Bangladesh will take on Sri Lanka in the opening match on May 28 (Sunday), meet India on May 30 (Tuesday) and face Pakistan on June 2 (Friday) at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.

NEW DELHI, April 20: The Government today pledged to use the full force of the law in investigating any match-fixing allegations against Indian cricketers. "The Government will leave no stone unturned to get to the bottom of any charges whether through a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation or any other investigative agency," Union Minister of State for Sports Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa told parliament.

Cronje inquiry to be launched Monday

JOHANNESBURG, April 16: A judicial inquiry into allegations of match-fixing against former South African captain Hansie Cronje will be launched in Johannesburg on Monday, the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCB) announced.

Bronwyn Wilkinson, communications manager of the UCB, said Sunday a judge was expected to be named Monday and discussions would start immediately to establish terms of reference.

Wilkinson said the UCB and the government departments of justice and sport would jointly brief the appointed judge.

CAPE TOWN, April 16: The publication of the transcript of alleged conversations between sacked national captain Hansie Cronje and bookmaker Sanjiv Chawla in South Africa for the first time has sent new shockwaves through the country.

The transcript received splash treatment by the local press on Sunday. If proven to be genuine, the transcript appears to confirm that Cronje was involved in match-fixing in spite of his denials. 

Cronje was fired on Tuesday after he admitted receiving what proved to be $ 8,200 from a bookmaker in return for information about a match. He claimed the payment was for forecasting and not for match-fixing.

Hansie Cronje losing lucrative sponsorships in the first indication of how scandals like match-fixing can hurt cricket in the long run. Adidas SA and Spurs Steak Ranches restaurant have decided to end links with the former South African skipper because they do not want consumers or patrons to associate their brand names with a disgraced cricketer.

 

Others will follow suit as an ostracized Cronje will realize the extent to which he has blackened his own face and that of cricket by admitting 'dishonest' links with bookies. Apart from all this, the shame faced by South Africa as a nation is a cross he will have to bear for the rest of his life, whatever penance he undertakes.

Cronje sacked over betting scandal

JOHANNESBURG, APR 11 (AP) - The United Cricket Board of SA on Tuesday withdrew captain Hansie Cronje from an upcoming series against Australia after officials said Cronje told them he had not been "entirely honest" in his denials of a match-fixing scandal, according to the South African Press Association.

 

Cronje, opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs, left-arm spinner Nicky Boje and batsman Pieter Strydom have been accused of accepting bribes from an Indian bookie to lose matches during their one-day international series in India earlier this month. All four have said they are innocent.

ST. JOHN'S, ANTIGUA, APR 10 (AP) - The West Indies Select lost its last six wickets for 34 runs to collapse to a 14-run defeat at the hands of Pakistan in the second one-day cricket practice match at the Recreation Ground here Sunday.

 

Pakistan, led by an even half century from Mohammad Wasim, scored 183 for nine off 50 overs after winning the toss. The home team was cruising along at 135 for three before they faltered to 169 all out off 40.3 overs. Ramnaresh Sarwan topscored with 47.

South Africa ring changes for Australia series

Johannesburg: The South African cricket selectors made extensive changes to its one-day international squad Thursday ahead of a three-match series against World Cup champions Australia.

 

Six players who were part of the squad that lost a one-day series in India and were beaten by Pakistan in the final of a tournament in Sharjah were left out. Only one, fast bowler Henry Williams, was left out because of injury.

Warne named in top five players of 20th Century

LONDON, APR 5 (UNB/AP) - Australian leg spinner Shane Warne is the only present day player named in Wisden's list of the top five cricketers of the 20th century.

The respected cricket almanac commissioned a poll of 100 cricketers and journalists and announced the results Wednesday, with Aussie master batsman Don Bradman edging West Indian all rounder Gary Sobers by 10 votes for the top position.

A salute to Shane Warne

Australian Shane Warne re-wrote the record books on March 15, 2000 at Auckland, New Zealand when he became the highest wicket-taker for his country. He had Kiwi tail-ender Paul Wiseman caught by wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist as Australia recorded it's eighth consecutive Test match win to defeat the home side by 62 run.

 

In all 10 bowlers have had the distinction of holding the Australian record for the maximum Test wickets at various stages in Test history. Paceman Frederick Spofforth was the first Australian bowler to take 50 wickets in 1882-83.

After three defeats in a row, Mohammedan Sporting Club returned to their winning ways with a hard fought victory over Gopibagh Friends Association at the BKSP ground in Savar yesterday.

 

In a low scoring affair, Mohammedans put the promotes in to bat and shot  in them out for just 147 in 38.1 overs, with their spin trio of Ruwan Kalpage, Mohammad Rafique and Hashan Rillekeratne sharing six wickets among themselves.

Dhaka, Apr 4 (UNB)- Abahani Limited maintained their winning run in the Janakantha Premier Division Cricket League earning a massive 8-wicket victory over Brothers Union Club at the Bangabandhu National Stadium today (Tuesday).

 

The day’s defeat, fourth in the league from eight matches, forced Brothers Union Club to almost slip the title race while this was Abahani’s eighth win from same number of outings.

HAMILTON, APR 3 (UNB/AP) - Justin Langer notched a century Monday as Australia crushed New Zealand by six wickets to complete a 3-0 series whitewash and secure its 10th successive test win. Langer, who blazed his 100 off 102 balls, cover drove a boundary to score the winning runs about an hour into the fourth day to finish unbeaten on 122 as Australia surpassed the target of 210 with almost two days to spare.

Srinath only in Tests : Kapil

New Delhi, April 2: Javagal Srinath, who has captured 252 wickets in his nine-year-long one-day career, is no longer interested in playing the limited-overs game, Indian cricket coach Kapil Dev indicated yesterday.

 

Srinath, who has appeared in 187 matches since making his one-day debut against Pakistan at Sharjah in 1991-92, hinted this during the just ended Sharjah tri-nations, Kapil Dev told PTI here.

Lara won't play in Dhaka

Bridgetown, April 1:  Brian Lara will not appear in the limited over-over match between a World XI and an Asian XI in Dhaka on April 8, reports AFP.

 

Nor is he giving any indication about when he will return to international cricket.

"I think it all depends on how things worked out," Lara told reporters in Barbados  about his return to the West Indies for the series  against Pakistan.

Pakistan showed they have put an end to the South African hoodoo by beating the Protease for the second successive time in what was an excellent final. It was the combination of youth and experience that won it for Pakistan, with Imran Nazir batting brilliantly and Waqar Younis bowling with heart and head, to eventually subdue the fighting South Africans.
