Chinese, Japanese, South Koreans to fly in balloons for World Cup

SEOUL, APR 26 (AP) - Ten Chinese, Japanese and South Koreans will fly in balloons across the Sea of Japan next week to promote the 2002 World Cup, organizers said Wednesday.

 

"The goal is clear. We want to promote the 2002 World Cup," said Yang Dong-hoon, a spokesman for (Korea) Sky Sports Association.

Bayern hang on in Bundesliga title race by edging Dortmund Ecuador

SAO PAULO, APR 26 (AP) - Coach Wanderley Luxemburgo removed forward Ronaldinho Gaucho from the team's starting line up against Ecuador saying that the soccer star has gained too much weight, according to reports.

The late Tuesday announcement came as a surprise and stirred up rumors that Gaucho might leave the team. Earlier this week, Gaucho had been assigned to join Edilson in Brazil's front line against Ecuador in Wednesday's 2002 World Cup qualifying match.

HERSHEY, Pennsylvania, APR 22 (AP) - Carlos Ruiz scored twice to lead Guatemala over Panama 2-1 Friday in the opening game of the final round of Olympic soccer qualifying from North and Central America and the Caribbean.

Ruiz scored in the 27th minute off a centering pass from Freddy Garcia, but Antonio Ortega tied it with a 7-yard (6-meter) header off Manuel Torres' free kick in the 29th.

Women's soccer team back on the field

CHULA VISTA, APR 18 (AP) - Although their uniforms had no numbers on them, Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain and some of their teammates were identified easily.

 

Hamm and Chastain, who starred on the 1999 Women's World Cup championship team, were among 15 returning players who took part in Monday's opening practice of the Olympic residency camp for the U.S. women's national team.

UNDATED, APR 17 (AP) - Trinidad and Tobago advanced Sunday to the third round of Caribbean qualifying for the 2002 World Cup along with Haiti, Cuba and Barbados.

Nigel Pierre scored in the 72nd minute as Trinidad and Tobago won 1-0 at the Dominican Republic to advance on 4-0 aggregate in the home-and-home, total-goals series.

Fans clash with police as Anderlecht blow another title chance

April 18, 2000 

 

BRUSSELS, APR 17 (AP) - Hundreds of frustrated Anderlecht fans clashed with police Sunday after their team wasted another chance to clinch the Belgian championship.

 

At least nine people were injured and several cars damaged as fans ran riot for an hour outside the stadium following Anderlecht's 2-1 defeat by AA Ghent, RTBF radio reported. Police used a water cannon to control the crowd.

Honduras knocks Nicaragua out of World Cup 2002 qualifying round

DIRIAMBA, Nicaragua, APR 17 (AP) - Honduras knocked Nicaragua out of the World Cup 2002 qualifying round Sunday with a 1-0 victory.

 

Luis Ramirez scored for Honduras in the 70th minute of the game played about 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of the Nicaraguan capital of Managua.

St. Vincent beats St. Kitts 1-0 in World Cup qualifier

KINGSTOWN, APR 17 (AP) - St. Vincent and the Grenadines beat St. Kitts and Nevis 1-0 Sunday to give the Vincentians the lead in their two-game World Cup qualifier competition.

 

Marlon James scored the single goal in the 82nd minute against St. Kitts goalkeeper Akil Byron, whose heroic effort at the net kept the Vincentians at bay for most of the game.

NYON, Switzerland, APR 12 (UNB/AP) - UEFA put off until Friday a decision on next week's potentially volatile UEFA Cup second-leg semifinal between Leeds United and Galatasaray to allow the Turkish club to respond to security reports from Britain. 

 

European soccer's governing body had been expected to rule Wednesday on arrangements for the April 20 match in Leeds following the stabbing deaths of two English fans in Istanbul last week.

Selection criteria for international meets do not violate EU law

LUXEMBOURG, APR 11 (UNB/AP) - The European Court of justice said Tuesday that selection criteria for world championships and Olympics do not violate European Union law and ruled against a judoka who claimed non-selection for international competitions had unjustly damaged her career.

 

"The national federations, which reflect the arrangements adopted in most sporting disciplines, are therefore entitled to lay down appropriate rules and to make selections," the EU's highest

TEHRAN, APR 10 (AP) - Three-time Asian Cup champion Iran overcame Bahrain 3-0 Sunday with spectacular second-half goals in the second leg of Asian Cup group 2 qualifiers.

 

In another Group 2 match, Syria beat Maldives 2-1, a respectable result for the weak Indian Ocean island team thanks to spectacular saves from its goalkeeper, Omran Mohammad.

SEOUL, APR 9 (AP) - South Korea qualified for the Asian Cup soccer finals this fall after beating Myanmar 4-0 in the last Group 6 qualifying match Sunday.

 

Seol Ki-hyeon and An Hyo-yeon each scored two goals at the game at Seoul's Tongdaemun stadium, improving South Korea's overall record to three wins and no defeat.

Leeds wants Galatasaray fans banned

LEEDS, APR 8 (AP) - Leeds United on Saturday urged European soccer officials to ban Galatasaray fans from the April 20 UEFA Cup match at Leeds with Galatasaray saying it will request a neutral site if its fans are barred from Leeds' Elland Road stadium.

 

UEFA, the governing body of European soccer, was widely criticized for playing Thursday's first-leg semifinal in Istanbul less than 24 hours after two Leeds fans were stabbed to death in street fighting with Turkish youths.

Galatasaray won the match 2-0.

Daei claims Player of Year honors

BEIRUT, APR 7 (UNB/AP) - Iranian striker Ali Daei, who scored four goals for Hertha Berlin including notable tallies against Chelsea and AC Milan in the European Champions League, was selected as the Asian Player of the Year on Thursday.

 

The 31-year-old Daei played for Taxirani and Pirouzi in his native Iran, Qatar's Al-Sadd and German clubs Armenia Bielefeld and Bayern Munich before transferring to Hertha this season.
