ASUNCION, Paraguay, APR 27 (AP) - Celso Ayala scored a first-half goal to  give Paraguay a 1-0 win over Uruguay and its first victory in 2002 World Cup qualifying play.

Ayala drove in a header in the 35th minute as Paraguay overcame an uninspired performance to beat an energetic Uruguayan team.

Paraguay opened the match looking to be aggressive, while Uruguay settled into a defensive game, content to seek out opportunities for quick counterattacks.

But Uruguay found inspiration in striker Alvaro Recoba, whose repeated attacks were denied by Paraguayan goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert. Chilavert turned away five free kicks by Recoba.

Uruguay finished playing a man down after Gonzalo de los Santos was sent off in the 69th minute for a tackle foul against Roque Santa Cruz.
