June 28, 2000

Khulna, June 27 (UNB) – Workers of Afil, Execs and Sonali Jute mills submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of the district on Monday demanding reopening of the mills.

Their demands also include immediate payment of their backlog salaries and withdrawal of the cases filed against their leaders.

The workers alleged that the owners illegally laid off the three jute mills in 1999, throwing some 20,000 workers out of job.

They also said 18 of their fellowmen died of starvation since the closure of the mills.

Labour leaders Golam Rasul, Nasu Mia, Shahabuddin Ahmed, Golam Mostafa and Omar Faruque, among others, were present when the memorandum was handed over to the DC.
