Chuo University

Chuo University was founded as Igirisu Horitsu Gakko (The English Law School) in 1885 by a group of eighteen young attorneys and scholars in central Tokyo. The founders endeavored to establish a university which would teach in the spirit of English law and democracy, a courageous effort reflecting the founders' resolve to modernize the Japanese legal system through progressive legal education.

The academic spirit upon which Chuo University was founded is based on the founders' desire to provide practical education and opportunities for personal maturity and intellectual growth to all qualified and willing students, an alternative to the national institutions which at that time were designed to educate only the elite. The independence and modernization of Japan owes a lot to the private schools founded in the early Meiji period, and this spirit which has been manifested at Chuo over its long history is still very much alive today.

After its beginning as the English Law School, the University was reorganized and renamed Chuo Central University in order to make manifest its role as a center of research and education. Through farsighted and careful planning, Chuo has grown to become one of the largest and most prestigious private universities in Japan, with six faculties - Law, Economics, Commerce, Science and Engineering, Literature, and Policy Studies.

On the occasion of its 90th anniversary, Chuo decided to build a new campus on the outskirts of Tokyo with a view to expanding its facilities and thus providing a more favorable environment for research and education. Now Chuo University boasts two modern campuses designed to meet all the needs of its students and faculty. The Faculty of Science and Engineering is located in central Tokyo, at the Korakuen Campus. The five other faculties enjoy a magnificent, spacious campus in the Western Tokyo suburb of Tama.
