TOEFL
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is
an essential pre-requisite for international students whose native
tongue is not English and who are seeking admission in US or
Canadian universities.
The purpose is to test their proficiency in English
language. More than 2,400 colleges and universities in the US and
Canada require TOEFL scores. In addition to universities and
colleges, many government agencies and scholarship programs also
require TOEFL.
The test has three sections:

Listening comprehension.
This measures your
ability to understand English as it is spoken in North America.

Written and structure expression.
This
measures the ability to recognize language appropriate for
standard written English.

Reading comprehension.
This measures your
ability to understand short passages similar in topic and style to
academic texts used in North American colleges and universities.
Test of Spoken English
Your score on the or TSE is
used by the college/university to measure your general oral English
language proficiency. Usually, some of the universities make TSE
scores a must, especially if one is enrolling for a Psychology
program. Chances of getting a teaching assistantship are good if
your scores are high. However, it is not an essential pre-requisite
for many programs.
You will have to pay extra and register separately
for TSE. You also need to also obtain a separate TSE
bulletin.
Test of Written English
TWE ( Test of Written English) measures your
proficiency in writing in the English language on an assigned topic.
Here you are required to compose an essay. This is available, along
with the TOEFL tests, only on some dates. You need not pay extra or
register for it separately. Though it appears along with TOEFL on
some test dates on the paper-based test, it is not compulsory.
However, some colleges/universities ask for it and you will have a
note on your TOEFL score report that mentions specifically that you
have not taken your TWE.
