WASHINGTON (AP) — Al Gore and George W. Bush are locked in a close race in a national tracking poll out Saturday and several states thought to be swinging Gore's direction reflected an overall tightening of the race.

The CNN-USA Today-Gallup tracking poll out Saturday had Gore at 48 percent and Bush at 45 percent, within the poll's 4 percentage point error margin. A Newsweek poll out Saturday also showed the race within the margins, at 47 percent for Gore to 45 percent for Bush.

Gore had been up 10 points in the CNN-USA Today-Gallup tracking poll earlier in the week and was up by 8 points in the last Newsweek poll, both among likely voters.

New state polls in Illinois, Ohio, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan highlighted the trend that the race in those battleground states is very competitive in some battleground states while Gore retained a lead in others.

Polls in Sunday editions of the Chicago Tribune looked at the race in five of the largest battleground states from New Jersey to Michigan. The polls found that the races in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan were very close, while Gore has a lead in Illinois and New Jersey — something reflected in earlier polls.

Those polls taken Sept. 11-17 showed the race more competitive in Michigan and Pennsylvania than in other recent polls, reflecting the tightening of the race nationally. The Illinois poll of 703 registered voters and the other polls were of 500 registered voters in each state. The polls had error margins of 4 percentage points.

—In Illinois, Gore led Bush 47 percent to 35 percent in the Tribune poll. (reflecting recent polls)

—In New Jersey, Gore led Bush 50 percent to 32 percent. (reflecting recent polls)

—In Pennsylvania, Gore had an edge of 43 percent to 38 percent. (Some recent polls have shown Gore significantly ahead)

—In Michigan, Gore and Bush were essentially even — Gore at 42 percent and Bush at 40 percent. (some recent polls showed Gore with an edge)

—In Ohio, they were also even with Gore at 42 percent and Bush at 40 percent. (reflecting recent polls)

In other new polls:

—In California, a poll taken for the San Francisco Examiner-KTVU showed Gore at 50 percent and Bush at 38 percent. The poll of 820 likely voters was taken Sept. 17-20 and had an error margin of 3.5 percentage points. (reflecting recent polls)

—In Vermont, Gore was up 52 percent to 39 percent in a poll of 603 likely voters taken Sept. 19-21 by Research 2000. The error margin was 3.5 percentage points. (reflecting recent polls)

The Newsweek national poll suggested Gore is favored on top issues like health care, education and Social Security, and he is seen about equally to Bush on the question of leadership qualities, a characteristic that has been a big Bush advantage for months.
