JAKARTA (AP) - A granddaughter-in-law of Indonesia's former dictator Suharto appeared in court Wednesday charged with possession of illegal drugs. Gusti Maya Firanti Noor, the wife of Suharto's grandson Ari Sigit, pleaded guilty to possession of a small quantity of amphetamines that was found in her handbag by police. But she denied having a larger stash of the drug, that police allegedly discovered under a seat of her Mercedes. Noor was arrested on June 22 and has been held in custody since. The trial was adjourned until Aug. 21. The only relative attending the hearing was her mother. Noor's grandfather-in-law, Suharto, has been named as an official suspect in a corruption scandal, involving the theft of about dlrs 570 million from several charitable foundations his family controlled. Indonesian prosecutor's have said they will bring the former autocrat to court soon. |
