MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) — The second strong earthquake in as many days shook Nicaragua Friday, causing houses to collapse and terrifying residents, radio reports said. There were reports of at least two deaths and several injuries.

The 5.2-magnitude quake hit at 6:10 p.m. and was centered in the Laguna de Apoyo, a lake that also was the epicenter of a 5.9-magnitude quake Thursday that killed four children. The lake is located about 25 miles east of the capital, Managua.

Friday's quake was followed by more than 30 aftershocks with magnitudes between 3.8 and 4, said the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies.

Radio Nicaragua reported that an 8-year-old child and a man were killed Friday when the wall of a house fell on them. The radio station did not say where the deaths had occurred.

The head of civil defense, Lt. Col. Mario Perez Cassar, said in Valle de la Laguna that 79 houses were destroyed and another 1,000 damaged in Thursday's quake, and that 1,762 people had been evacuated from unsafe areas.

The rescue efforts were complicated by land and rockslides on the steep road leading into the village. The army sent helicopters into the area to help take out the injured.
