LONDON (AP) - London's business district celebrated Queen Mother Elizabeth's approaching 100th birthday Tuesday with pealing bells and a sumptuous meal of lobster, lamb and strawberry meringue.

The Queen Mother, whose birthday is Aug. 4, warmly thanked the 500 guests at the luncheon, given by the Lord Mayor of London, Clive Martin.

"It has been a great joy and I have been greatly, greatly touched," she said, before proposing a toast to the gathering.

With no glass to raise, the Queen Mother pointed teasingly toward the glass of red wine held by Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey, standing beside her, and said, "That's mine."

Television coverage of the event gave many Britons their first chance to hear the Queen Mother speak.

The bells of nearby St. Lawrence Jewry church rang out as the Queen Mother arrived at the Guildhall, the city's ancient town hall, with Princess Margaret, who is her younger daughter and the sister

of Queen Elizabeth II.
