SEOUL-- (AP) - President Kim Dae-jung plans a summit with U.S. President George W. Bush in mid-March, South Korea's foreign minister said Saturday.

Foreign Minister Lee Joung-binn spoke to a group of South Korean reporters on Saturday after returning from a three-day visit to Washington, where he met with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Kim has said he wants to meet with Bush as soon as possible to coordinate the allies' policy toward communist North Korea.

"It will likely happen in mid-March. We will make a formal announcement after Washington gives us a summit schedule within a few days," Lee was quoted as saying by domestic media.

Foreign Ministry officials were not available to confirm the remark on Saturday evening.

During Lee's visit to Washington, the Bush administration said it supports South Korea's policy of reconciliation with the reclusive North.

The United States has worked in recent years to coordinate policy toward Pyongyang with Japanese and South Korean allies.

Some South Korean officials were worried that while continuing to engage North Korea, the new U.S. administration might adopt a more demanding and conservative stance that could slow momentum on Seoul's efforts to engage the North.
