FRANKFURT (AP) - German companies are Europe's heavyweights when it comes to revenue, with DaimlerChrysler topping the list, according to a new ranking released Monday.

Six of Europe's top 10 companies are German, according to the listing of Europe's top 500 firms based on sales. The study was sponsored by the Wall Street Journal Europe and the German business daily Handelsblatt.

Stuttgart-based DaimlerChrysler took the No. 1 spot with annual sales of 149.98 billion euros (dlrs 140.98 billion).

Fellow automaker Volkswagen was No. 4, insurance company Allianz No. 5, electronics firm Siemens No. 6, Deutsche Bank No. 7, and utility giant Veba No. 10.

Rounding out the top ten were British oil company BP Amoco at No. 2, French insurance company AXA at No. 3, Royal Dutch oil concern at No. 7 and Italian holding company Ifi at No. 9.

German companies clearly lagged behind others in terms of market capitalization, or how much the company is worth in outstanding stock.

By that measure, the leading firm was British mobile phone company Vodafone AirTouch, which had a market capitalization of 283.21 billion euros (dlrs 266.21 billion). DaimlerChrysler rang up

to only 62.54 billion euros (dlrs 58.78 billion) to come in at No.26.
