TAIPEI, (AP) - Strong demand for Taiwanese electronic products sent the island's May export orders soaring to a record high, extending a double-digit growth streak to eight months, the  government said Wednesday.

Export orders rose 29 percent last month to U.S. dlrs 13.4 billion, breaking the previous record of U.S. dlrs 12.6 billion posted in March, the government said.

Industrial production in May gained 8.61 percent, up from April's seven-month low of 5.98 percent, and well up from market expectations of 4.93 percent.

Strong export orders last month were largely attributed to the continued expansion of the global economy and recovery in the semiconductor industry, said Chang Yaw-tzong, statistics director at the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Export orders of electronics goods totaled U.S. dlrs 2.79 billion in May, up 64 percent, while orders for communications goods gained 37 percent to total U.S. dlrs 2.44 billion.

The growth of export orders should come in above 15 percent for the full year because of the solid performance seen in electronics and information technology sectors, Chang said. However growth will likely slow down in the second half given a high base in the latter half of 1999, he said.
