Dhaka--(Bangla2000)- President Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed hoped that the SAARC countries would work closely and make concessions for transition from preferential trading under SAPTA to South Asia Free Trade Area (SAFTA).

He made the suggestion when visiting Sri Lankan Minister for Constitutional Affairs, Industrial Development and Deputy Minister for Finance Prof GL Peiris made a courtesy call on the President at Bangabhaban yesterday (Monday).

Welcoming Prof Peiris President Shahabuddin said relations between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are deep-rooted bilaterally and in international fora.

He, however, said the volume of trade between the two countries is rather small and does not reflect the existing true potential.

He hopped that Dhaka-Colombo direct air link would help greater interactions with Sri Lanka in the field of trade and economic cooperation.

President Shahabuddin mentioned the high priority of government to foreign direct investment and the attractive incentives offered by Bangladesh to the investors.

Prof Peiris thanked the president for receiving him. He also praised excellent bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and said there is enormous scope for furthering economic cooperation between the two nations.

He mentioned that a team of businessmen and entrepreneurs of Sri Lanka is now visiting Bangladesh to explore the possibilities of business and investment.

Sri Lankan High Commissioner in Dhaka Ediriweera Gamage Daynanda, senior advisor of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka Edmond Jaysing and Industry secretary of Bangladesh Al Amin Chowdhury were present on the occasion.
