Dhaka--(UNB) – Underscoring the need for higher education especially in science and technology, Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria sought assistance from donor agencies and countries, including World Bank, for such curricula. The Finance Minister made the appeal when visiting World Bank Vice President Jozef M Ritzen called on the Finance Minister at his office yesterday. They discussed NGO activities, trade and World Bank-assisted programmes in the country during the meeting. Talking about NGO activities, Finance Minister Kibria said Bangladesh is home to a large number of NGOs which are primarily engaged in providing micro-credits in income- generating activities to the poor. “They (NGOs) are also contributing towards creating social awareness in education, health, family planning, women and child welfare and other programmes,” he told the WB executive. “But, the contribution of the NGOs to poverty alleviation is yet to be assessed.” Kibria also said the present government is very supportive to the NGOs and has been utilizing them in government programmes like non-formal education and low-cost housing for the poor. He thanked World Bank for providing assistance in primary and secondary education as well as women education. The WB Vice President expressed his eagerness to know about NGO activities, education and trade policy in the country. World Bank Country Director Fredrick Temple was present on the occasion. |
