Dhaka-- (UNB) – The Matching Grant Facility (MGF), a component of the World Bank-aided Bangladesh Export Diversification Project, has so far approved $ 7.6 million grant for 319 projects from its inception in August 1999. The applicants included 309 exporters and 10 service providers, said a press release. The figures were disclosed at the 20th MGF management board meeting held with its chairman Yussuf Abdullah Harun in the chair recently. The meeting was attended, among others, by members Sayed Manzur Elahi, Samson H Chowdhury, Major General (Retd) Amjad Khan Chowhdury, Md Fazlul Huq, Dr Chowdhury Saleh Ahmed, MGF manager James N Curry and deputy programme manager M Mobassar Husain. The Board gave fresh approval a total amount of $ 0.98 million to 48 applications presented at the meeting. The Board noted with satisfaction the interest generated by MGF among the country’s exporters eager to diversify their exports or to attain greater competitiveness in the global market. Several grantees have already appreciated MGF for the benefits they have derived from the implementation of their on-going programmes. MGF is an innovative scheme introduced by the government with a loan from the International Development Association (IDA)/ World Bank. Most of the exporters who have availed of MGF’s assistance so far are from RMG, knitwear, leather, IT and frozen food sectors. The Board, therefore, stressed on the need for making a greater effort to invite applications particularly from handicrafts, furniture, vegetable, flower and other small but potential sectors. Service providers also welcomed to the fund. |
