Sylhet-- (UNB) – A 54-km underground pipeline is being laid to supply gas to capital Dhaka from Sylhet. Bangladesh Gas Transmission Company Ltd (GTCL) along with two other companies, including a Chinese one, is implementing the project. Upon completion of the project, some 250 million cubic feet of gas can be supplied to Dhaka and its adjoining areas, officials said. They said the country would be in need of 1,300 million cubic feet of natural gas in 2001, of which Dhaka and its adjoining areas alone would require 80 million cubic feet. There are a good number of gas wells in Sylhet from where additional gas could be lifted whenever needed, the officials said. However, insiders said implementation of the project might be delayed by six months as time is being wasted in covering the imported pipes with polythene. The sources said if the project could not be finished in time, gas transmission from the district would be delayed for which the government would have to compensate the Chinese company. |
