Calcutta-- (UNB)- Bangladesh and West Bengal agreed to ease customs and immigration procedures on the land routes for smooth movement of travelers and goods between the two next-door neighbors.

West Bengal government has already started work on broadening the approach road to Bangaon-Haridaspur frontier on Indian side and constructing truck terminals and passengers’ rest-house at the border.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya apprised Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abdus Samad Azad of their steps at Mahakaran here yesterday (Monday).

Strengthening economic cooperation and encouraging joint ventures also came up during the talks when the visiting Bangladesh foreign minister made a courtesy call on the Chief Minister at his chamber.

A bridge is being constructed on priority basis to facilitate movement of heavy trucks carrying goods to and from the Bangaon-Haridaspur checkpost, Bhattacharya said.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Azad invited more joint-venture Indian investments in power, gas and other sectors to help reduce trade imbalance between the two countries.

Azad requested the West Bengal Chief Minister to encourage West Bengal investors to take up their ventures in Bangladesh.

Earlier, he congratulated Bhattacharya on his taking over as West Bengal chief minister and conveyed the best wishes of Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Azad recalled the contribution of former chief minister Jyoti Basu to further consolidating friendly relations between the two countries through Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, Tin Bigha corridor agreement and Dhaka-Calcutta bus service.

“We hope the same spirit would also continue in the period of the present Chief Minister,” the FM said.

West Bengal Finance Minister Dr Asim Dasgupta and Bangladesh deputy high commissioner posted in Calcutta M Humayun Kabir were present.

Earlier, the foreign minister visited Bangladesh mission in Calcutta and addressed the officials and employees urging them to uphold the spirit of the mission that played a very significant role during Bangladesh’s War of Liberation.
