Dhaka (UNB)- Business leaders sought setting up of a separate port to reduce pressures on existing ones and facilitate external trade that often gets stuck in congestion in the seaports.

Attending a meeting of Taskforce on export today (Sunday), they discussed the services at Chittagong Port and stressed the need for improving its efficiencies.

The Taskforce, that reviewed the export performance in July-September period of the current 2000-2001 fiscal year, noted with dissatisfaction unfair practices in shrimp export and directed the authorities concerned to take stern action against those involved.

Export earnings in the first quarter of the current fiscal exceeded the target by 10.61 per cent and posted a 25.38 per cent growth over the same period of the previous fiscal.

The earnings from exports in the period were slightly over US$ 1.74 billion, against the aggregate target of 1.57 billion, as frozen foods, tea, leather and RMG exports well exceeded respective targets. However, jute and jute goods, handicrafts and electronic goods failed to reach the marks.

The meeting sought cooperation from all concerned for keeping up the export trend throughout the fiscal year.

Chaired by Commerce Minister Abdul Jalil, the meeting was attended by Commerce Secretary Golam Rahman, Shipping Secretary Suhel Ahmed Chowdhury, Export Promotion Bureau vice-chairman AB Chowdhury, BGMEA president Anisur Rahman Sinha, BLLEA president Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan and representatives of various government offices and trade chambers.
