Dhaka-- (UNB)- Lawmakers in a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Industries Ministry suggested disbursing low-interest bank loans to small industries to make them viable. Meeting sources said they felt that maximum interest on bank credits for small industries should be 10 per cent. Many units of Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) turned sick and unable to repay loans due to higher rates of interest that ranged between 12 and 16 per cent, the committee noted. "Prospective small industries need to be promoted to accelerate the economy and generate employment," the committee suggested. Committee Chairman Dewan Farid Gazi presided over the meeting at Sangsad Bhaban while members Industries Minister Tofail Ahmed, Mohammad Rafiqul Anwar, Shahnaz Sardar, Mohammad Golam Hossain and AKM Mosharraf Hossain attended. The meeting reviewed the performance of Bank of Small Industries and Commerce (BASIC). It emphasized the need for modernizing the operations of the Department of Trade Mark, Patent and Design and suggested amendments to its acts and rules. |
