LAKE PLACID, New York (AP) - President Bill Clinton passed up a roadside sign offering "Free Ribs for Bill" on Friday, but couldn't resist another, held aloft by a group of children, that wished him a happy birthday.

"That was so nice of you to do that," Clinton said as he, first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, daughter Chelsea and family dog Buddy posed for a picture in front of the large, multicolored sign that read "Happy Birthday President Clinton."

Clinton and his family are spending a quiet weekend away from Washington to celebrate Clinton's 54th birthday on Saturday and to lie low while Vice President Al Gore makes his maiden political trip as the official Democratic Party presidential nominee.
