JAMMU, JUNE 11 (AP) - A passenger bus carrying army soldiers veered off a mountain road and plunged into a gorge in the northern Kashmir state killing 27 people Sunday, officials said.

At least 18 others were wounded in the crash that took place after the bus went out of control in the Chamalwas area, about 180 kilometers (108 miles) north of Jammu, the winter capital of the

frontier state of Jammu-Kashmir, a government official said on customary condition of anonymity.

The bus, owned by the state-run transport corporation, was traveling to Srinagar, the state's summer capital. Army soldiers are sometimes transported in civilian buses to avoid attacks by Islamic insurgents in the state, wracked for 10 years by a separatist insurgency. The guerrillas have in the past set blown up several army trucks with land mines.

Few other details were immediately available from the remote mountainous area.
