KUALA LUMPUR- (UNB/AP) - The World Assembly of Youth has joined the international community in calling on Afghanistan's Taliban government to stop destroying pre-Islamic relics.

WAY president Mohamed Ali Rustam said the United Nations' Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization should negotiate with Taliban officials.

"The World Assembly of Youth joins the U.N. and UNESCO in appealing to all those concerned to stop the destruction of the cultural heritage of the people of Afghanistan," he said in a statement.

UNESCO needs to take quick and concerted action to prevent further destruction, he said.

Mohamed Ali, also the chief minister of the Malaysian state of Malacca, said Afghanistan has a unique cultural heritage reflecting a history marked by the complex influences of Persia, Greece, Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam.
