NEW YORK (AP) - There were three stars who stole the show at VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards, and none were the hip, stylish celebrities that the music and fashion industry were there to honor.

Paul McCartney surprised his daughter Stella on stage Friday night, presenting her with the Designer of the Year award for her work at Chloe. The former Beatle got a standing ovation from the audience and a heartfelt hug from his daughter.

"Well, I'd better thank him," Stella said. "And I would like to thank my mum. I give this to her."

Stella would have made her late mother proud, ending her acceptance speech by asking the high-fashion audience not to buy fur coats. Linda McCartney, a passionate supporter of animal rights, died of breast cancer in 1998.

The only other person who brought the audience to its feet during the two-hour ceremony at the Theater at Madison Square Garden was the "Godfather of Soul," James Brown. Brown joined Lenny Kravitz on stage to perform a duet of "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag."

Ben Stiller won over the audience when he asked for its cooperation while he filmed scenes, during commercial breaks, of him accepting a fashion award for his upcoming movie "Zoolander." Dressed as supermodel character Derek Zoolander, Stiller looked very trendy in a black leather suit.

The fashion story from the awards show, broadcast on VH1, was leather - from Jennifer Love Hewitt's tailored white leather pants suit to host Cuba Gooding Jr.'s white leather pants, which he wore with a white fur coat and white cowboy hat.

Latin heartthrob Enrique Iglesias also followed the leather trend, wearing a casual brown leather jacket with a green T-shirt.

"I've got to be honest. I know nothing about fashion," said Iglesias as he picked up his award for Most Fashionable Male Artist.

Beaded clothing continues to show up on the stars, such as Angie Harmon of the television show "Law & Order," who looked sexy and beautiful while showing very little skin in a platinum-beaded turtleneck dress, and Jennifer Lopez, who opted for a short skirt instead of plunging neckline in a long-sleeve blue beaded dress.

Pants suits for women were also very popular. Chloe Sevigny, who won for Best Female Celebrity Style, wore a black one, and Most Fashionable Female Artist Macy Gray wore a navy outfit with metal studs around the neck and pant cuffs.

For men, ties were taboo. Presenters Dylan McDermott and Christian Slater opted for knit shirts under their suit jackets.

On the other end of the spectrum, Kid Rock and his band must have worked hard to coordinate their outfits. He wore a Wal-Mart T-shirt; the others wore T-shirts with Home Depot and Kmart logos.
