Dhaka (UNB) – Some one crore people in the country are carrying the germs of thalassaemia and about 8000 children are born with the disease every year.

This was disclosed at the inaugural function of a blood transfusion and diagnostic centre sponsored by Bangladesh Thalassaemia Samity (BTS), a voluntary organisation.

State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Prof M Amanullah was the chief guest in the inaugural function chaired by BST president Engineer Omar Golam Rabbani.

Among others, eminent child specialist national professor MR Khan, Japan Embassy Minister Kiyokazu Ota and Prof MA Mannan of Bangabandhu Medical University spoke on the occasion.
