Dhaka (UNB) – Disclosing that arsenic contaminated water has been found in country’s 225 upazilas, State Minister for Environment HN Ashiqur Rahman yesterday said safe drinking in Bangladesh has always been a crucial issue.

 

His remarks came while inaugurating a water quality-testing laboratory at the NGO Forum office here this morning.

 

Rahman hoped that the laboratory would be able to play a vital role in testing arsenic contaminated water of the country.

 

Over 25 parameters of water quality like arsenic, iron, fluoride and microbial agents could be tested in the laboratory set up with financial support from Denmark.

 

Chaired by Dr Fazle Hossain Abed, the inaugural programme was addressed, among others, by Danish Ambassador Finn Thilsted, Collins J David of UNICEF, Fariduddin Ahmed Mia, Executive Director of NGO Forum SMA Rashid and its Arsenic Cell Chief Dr Abul Hasnat Milton.

 

The Danish envoy said they are cooperating with the Bangladesh government and non-government organisations in ensuring pure water supply and sanitation as their government attaches top priority to the sector.

 

He also appreciated the NGO Forum, an organisation working on drinking water supply and Sanitation, for setting up the laboratory.

 

Describing the laboratory as a milestone, Collince J David said there is no alternate to setting up of laboratory for ensuring safe water supply.

 

SMA Rashid said the uniqueness of this laboratory would be to provide service at a cheaper rate alongside maintaining quality.
