Dhaka (UNB)- A three-day meeting on ‘potential for use of deeper aquifers as drinking water sources particularly in arsenic-affected areas’ began here yesterday.

 

Experts from International Atomic Energy Authority, Vienna, University College London, Dhaka University, Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) study team, the Bangladesh Water Development Board, US Geological Survey and Geological Survey of Bangladesh made presentations on the inaugural day.

 

Organized by the Department of Public Health Engineering, with support from UNICEF and the Water and Sanitation-South Asia, of World Bank, the meeting shared all available information about the deeper aquifers and deep tubewells.

 

On the second day, a roundtable discussion will be held on the issues surrounding exploitation of deeper aquifers.

 

The concluding session will be held on Tuesday with an open discussion where the purpose and conclusions of the meeting will be shared with relevant stakeholders and the press.
