Dhaka (UNB) - Students and teachers in city schools and colleges have worked together to clean the educational premises in a drive against Aedes mosquito that spread dengue fever.

The 3-day drive ended yesterday (Saturday) when schools and colleges were declared holiday to clean the premises, many of which had breeding ground of mosquito.

The government had declared three-day holiday for all schools, colleges and madrasas in dengue affected areas, including Dhaka and Chittagong cities.

After the cleaning operation, many schools and colleges informed Dhaka City Corporation for fogging, larvising and taking away the dust and dirt.

Although many schools and colleges were not closed due to examination, cleaning drive received favourable response among the people as well as students.

Talking to UNB, headmasters and principals of different schools and colleges in the capital appreciated the role of students and authorities in the cleaning operation.

Father Benjamin Costa, Principal of Notre Dame College said, "If each and every person spontaneously clean his or her premises regularly, possibility of many infectious diseases will be reduced."

Shyamoli Nasreen Chowdhury, principal of Udayan High School said she got a huge response from her students and the DDC also for cleaning operation.

Mayor Mohammad Hanif said, "I hope everything will be alright within a week and the mosquito menace will be under control if the city dwellers continue their help."

"Many schools and colleges were not closed due to their examination, but we got a huge and conscious response from them," the Mayor said appreciating the city dwellers. He suggested that they should clean the flower tub, coconut shell etc along with cleaning their premises.

Chief Health officer of DCC Dr Ashraf Uddin said they are getting phone calls from the schools and colleges for taking garbage and larvising their premises.

"We are successful as we could reach people. Now we are cleaning extra 5 to 6 trucks of garbage…It must be continued for a total cure."

The Mayor held a meeting yesterday with his zonal officers to review the anti-mosquito drive.
