Dhaka (UNB) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday asked the physicians to work with service-oriented mentality, ensure best possible treatment and help the government reach healthcare facilities to all.

“It’s not possible for the government alone… the private sector should come forward to ensure medical services for all,” she said inaugurating a Community Welfare and Health Care Center at Dhanmondi in the afternoon.

The center, a public-private joint venture, is an organ of Bangladesh Medical Studies and Research Institute.

The government provided Tk 8.18 crore for the project which was completed at a cost of Tk 22 crore. The center is maintaining a 230-bed hospital and providing most modern treatment to the patients, organizers said.

They said, poor patients are getting free treatment in the hospital, where 30 beds have been kept reserved for the poor patients.

So far, 1,174 students in 14 batches have been admitted to Bangladesh Medical College, the study section of the institute, and 298 of them got the MBBS degree.

The Prime Minister said attention should be given so that the poor people can get the modern treatment and elaborated government’s steps for reaching medical services to the doorsteps of the people.

She said the government has taken a massive project for setting up 18,000 community healthcare centers across the country or one centre for every 6000 people. This will give immediate medical service to the rural people and save lives.

The PM also mentioned other steps for the expansion of medical services and said the government has taken steps for increasing efficiency and skills of the doctors and health workers.

She said for increasing the number of expert physicians the government has set up Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and stressed upgrading the standard of education and treatment.

If the patients can get modern treatment in the country they will not go abroad, she said adding, “We do not want our patients to go abroad for treatment.”

The Prime Minister asked the hospital authorities to take care about the disposal of hospital waste, which she said, might spread diseases in the residential area if it is not managed properly.

She said without considering the capacity and civic amenities of an area some people are constructing hospitals, industrial units and educational institutions. These are creating problems for the people residing in that area, she said.

For unplanned construction of hospitals and business units in the residential areas, the city dwellers are facing the problems of water, power and traffic jams, she said.

The Prime Minister suggested that hospitals are set up with modern equipment and facilities far from the capital, saying if the people can go to Velor, London, USA for better treatment, then why they will not be able to go outside the capital.

“Go out of the capital, choose a big area,” she told the physicians for constructing hospitals and assured government’s help in this regard.

Mentioning government steps for increasing the medical facilities for the people, she said the government has also taken an integrated plan for removing malnutrition problem of mothers and children.

Hasina said for reducing the mother-child death the government has introduced emergency service package, which is providing service from one center.

For the patronization of the private sector growth of medical service, the government is giving assistance to BIRDEM, Dhaka Community Hospital, National Heart Foundation, Shishu Foundation, Senile Science Institute, and Bangladesh Medical Studies and Research Institute.

She was happy to learn that Bangladesh Medical Service and Research Institute will also run a mobile hospital, conduct training programmes of nurses, day-care center and other welfare activities.

The Prime Minister hoped the physicians will not confine their services to the capital and among the rich only, they will also provide service to the poor and rural people.

She also called upon the rich people to contribute to the hospitals for extending service and providing treatment to the poor people.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, State Minister for Health Prof M Amanullah, State Minister for Planning Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, Social Welfare Secretary Khanoda Mohan Das and Chairman of the management committee of the Hospital M Mahabubuzzaman also addressed the function.
