Health Minister Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim reaffirmed this while inaugurating an essential service package (ESP) orientation workshop at the Institute of Child and Mother Health (ICMH) in Matuail today.

The workshop for civil surgeons and deputy directors (Family Planning) was, in fact, launched in 1998 for efficient implementation of Health and Population Sector Programme (HPSP).

It’s main objective is to improve the quality of health service delivery system for ensuring better healthcare services for rural people.

The minister told the programme that the government has brought 116 thanas under the training programme, while the rest will be brought under it in phases.

He said the government has taken up a scheme for the development of five medical colleges in Bogra, Comilla, Dinajpur, Faridpur and Khulna.

A 250-bed modern hospital at Khalishpur, involving 17 million US dollars, is nearing completion with financial assistance from Spanish government.

The Health Minister urged the civil surgeons and deputy directors (FP) to work with utmost sincerity for successful implementation of the programs taken up under HPSP and asked them to create public awareness about arsenic and deadly diseases like HIV/AIDS and malaria.

Chaired by ICMH Director Prof MOK Talukder, the inaugural session was also addressed by Additional Secretary of the Ministry Diraj Kumar Nath and Director of Medical Education Prof Shah Monir Hussain.

Sixty-two trainees -- civil surgeons and deputy directors  (FP) -- from Khulna and Rajshahi divisions are participating in the workshop.
