Dhaka- (UNB) – Commerce Minister M Abdul Jalil yesterday called for concerted efforts and creating greater awareness among the people in order to stop increasing environment pollution.

“We must stop environment pollution for the sake of our existence and to continue our efforts for socio-economic development,” he told a seminar on “People and Environment” here yesterday.

Bangladesh Psychologist Association (BPA) and South Asia Psychologist Association jointly organised the 2-day seminar at the Bangladesh Institute of Administration and Management conference room.

A large number of psychologists from the host Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal and other south Asian countries took part in the seminar chaired by BPA president Dr M Rawshan Ali. 

Among others, Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Dr AK Azad Chowdhury and BPA member secretary Shah Alam addressed the seminar.

The Commerce Minister, who was the Chief Guest in the seminar, stressed the need for encouraging the people all walks of life in showing environment-friendly attitude. 

“Environment pollution cannot be stopped merely through application of technology or by the government efforts only, it needs concerted efforts by all,” he said.

The minister called upon the psychologists to come forward in increasing public awareness on environment pollution to save environment and maintain ecological balance. 

Jalil observed that the environment pollution is intensifying alarmingly with the increase of industrialisation and its direct effects are inflicting human civilization.

“Bangladesh government has already adopted policies and took necessary steps in cooperation with World Bank and other development agencies to control environment pollution,” he said.

The Minister said the government has taken necessary steps to stop all sorts of environment pollution.

In this regard, he mentioned various projects including Air Quality Management Project involving US dollar 4.7 million, Dhaka Urban Transport Project and Vehicle Examination and Movement project.
