Dhaka--(UNB)- The government has decided to hang list of essential and life saving medicines at government hospitals so that people know their availability.

The measure was taken to check pilferage of medicines from the hospitals where patients have to buy each and every medicine although government is spending crores of taka to supply medicines to all the hospitals.

The decision was informed by Health Minister Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim at a briefing in his office on community clinic yesterday.

He said steps would be taken to replenish the stock to make the medicines available always.

“In case of shortfall of any medicine, the doctor on duty in the hospital will instantly buy it and supply to the patient who needs it. The doctor will be repaid later,” said the minister.

He further said order has been issued to form committee with local MP, DC, SP, representatives from different professions including journalist, traders, lawyers and women to monitor and improve the quality of treatment in government hospitals.

The minister admitted that complaints were received and found correct that in most cases patients do not get essential and lifesaving drugs in the hospitals.

A list of drugs available is being hung in all the hospitals. In fact, it has already been done in some hospitals, added the minister.

Arrangement will be taken so that essential and lifesaving medicines are always available to patients free of cost, Selim said adding other necessary drugs will also be made available.

About mushroom growth of diagnostic clinics, he said the Act of 1982 would soon be amended to check illegal setting up of such laboratories.

He said some 28 illegal diagnostic laboratories have been identified. Order has been issued to close eleven of them.
