Dhaka (UNB) – One need not rush to doctors or hospitals in all cases of illness.

A former medical officer of World Health Organisation has prescribed solution to a variety of common diseases and accidents that can provide a family homespun treatment.

The book entitled Home Health Care, written by Dr KM Rashid, formerly Medical Officer of World Health Organisation, makes common people more conscious about their health problems, enable them to suspect the nature of illnesses and participate in the treatment of the condition.

The handy medical book emphasizes general observational skills which help a person suspect a deviation from normal health conditions, describes nearly a hundred health problems or illnesses and provides information on some health-related topics.

Introduction of alternative medicine under the chapter-herbal medicine-is important and interesting, medical experts observed at a ceremony held yesterday (Saturday) marking publication of the book.

The publication ceremony was held at the National Press Club. National Professor Dr MR Khan graced the occasion as chief guest while Dr Shireen Huq, teacher of Jahangirnagar University, and Prof Dr Mini Mathan, Consultant of ICDDR,B and immediate-past President of UNWA, were special guests.

All in their speeches congratulated Dr Rashid on bringing out such a useful book on family healthcare.

“In this book Dr Rashid covered such an important area which confronts people during their life time. We sometimes get perplexed at commonly occurring illnesses and accidents,” the speakers unanimously observed.

Nevertheless, the writer notes, it is absolutely necessary to know when and under what condition one must consult a qualified doctor.

“One must not take full responsibility for his or her own health and medical care,” says the author, suggesting one to consult qualified physicians under the conditions described in the book.

Dr Syeed Hyder, a freelance writer on health topics and family medicine practitioner, has written the foreword, saying that this concise and handy book which provides valid information is a valuable guide for the family members regarding their common health issues.

“The origins of many of the medicines presently available in the market are herbs, but we do not have any study on herbal medicine,” Dr Rashid told UNB explaining reasons for his stress on herbal treatment.

Moreover, he said, herbal medicine is less costly and free from side-affect.

“For example, take blood pressure. If one knows how to check the pressure or how to check the temperature, he needs not to go to the doctors, it is a sort of general observational skill.”

Nowadays, commented the ex-medical officer of WHO, doctors charge high their fees whether it is normal fever or headache and whether the patient is rich or poor.
