Dhaka (UNB) - Muktijoddha Sangsad shattered Mohammedan SC’s hope to take a solo lead in the NBL Premier Division Football League beating by a solitary goal at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday (Thursday).

The day’s well-merited victory helped the title aspirant freedom fighters team to take joint lead with Mohammedan Sporting Club as both teams secured 21 points from eight matches.

Substitute Liton netted the all-important goal for the winners in the 19th minute in the second half before more than 20,000 crowds, so far highest in the ongoing league.

After their poor show in the first six matches where they lost three points, the freedom fighters team came back at the right track beating another giant Abahani Limited also by a solitary goal in their previous encounter.

Muktojoddha Sangsad dominated all through the match against the defending champions, who looked totally off-color in the day’s crucial match.

The celebrated Motijheel outfit managed to build a lone attempt in the opposition goal post in the whole match but defender Ruhul Amin’s volley in the 34th minute of the second half was far behind the target.

The winners marshaled in the midfield before the lemon break but failed to create any tangible pressure on the opposition fort but the scenario was changed in the attacking zone after Amin Rana joined in the second half.

The super playmaker Amin Rana, who came at the field against Abahani Limited in their previous match after his long absence due to injury, boosted the freedom fighters’ attacks and created an opportunity in the 62nd minute but his cross was saved by custodian Rezaul Hakim with one hand.

But they waited only two minutes to earn the much-expected fruit when Liton placed the ball over the advancing goalie Hakim’s head from a long throw of defender Sujon.

The winners should gave much credit to their captain and central defender Rajani Kanta Barman, who showed a brilliant form in the day’s match foiling opposition attacks with the support of promising Sujan.

Muktojoddha have had more chances to finish the match with handsome score as they demolished the opposition defense after scoring the goal.

In the 20th minute of the second half, the luck again disfavored Amin Rana, who reached close dodging Jewel Rana, but his shot flew away kissing the cross bar while in the injury time his shot narrowly missed the target.

The scorer in the day’s match, Liton got another good chance in the 41st minute of the second half to double his score but he played wide in close from a Mintu cross.
