WAVRE, Belgium (AP) - With a place in the quarterfinals of Euro 2000 assured, world champion France might rest key players for its last Group D match against the Netherlands, a game many fans see as an early final.

Coach Roger Lemerre says using his whole squad of 22 is key to France's attempt to be the first world champion to win the European Championships.

"We play with 22 players," he said.

A bruising 2-1 win against the Czech Republic on Friday might mean changes for Wednesday's clash in Amsterdam against the Netherlands, which has also booked a place in the last eight.

"We are clearly suffering physically and we must be vigilant," Lemerre said. "It is fundamental that our athletic capacity is maximized.

"I need to protect the physical integrity of the players. We need to manage the squad," he said.

France did likewise in its successful quest for the World Cup two years ago. It qualified for the second round after two games and rested several players in its last opening round game. It still went on to beat Denmark 2-1.

Emmanuel Petit and Bixente Lizarazu are both recovering well after knocks but might be rested in Amsterdam.

"Medical tests were reassuring but it might be wise for them not to play on Wednesday against the Netherlands," said team doctor Jean-Marcel Ferret.

Lemerre wants to ensure that his players remain sharp for next weekend's quarterfinals.

"Playing three matches in eight days worries we," he said. "We have to think about the yellow card to (Lilian) Thuram and imagine the solutions if Petit hasn't recuperated."

Tactical changes might also be in store.

"For instance we could move Marcel Desailly in front of the defense, where he played last year with Chelsea."

While several other leading teams are struggling to field a convincing starting lineup Lemerre, 59 on Sunday, has the luxury of a full squad of in-form players.

Against the Czech Republic, Roma's Vincent Candela put in a convincing performance at left back after Lizarazu injured a thigh in a pre-match warmup.

Second-half substitute Christophe Dugarry showed his adaptability with a battling display in midfield.

"Candela only knew he was going to play a few minutes before the match but came on with a ferocious appetite. It was the same for Christophe Dugarry when he came on," Lemerre said.

"If you give them a chance to eat, they clear the plate."
