Dhaka-- - – Bangladesh completed their World Cup Football qualifying round campaign with another frustrating result after a 2-2 draw with all loser Mongolia in the Saudi Arabian city Dammam on Monday. In the first leg of the Asian Group-10 qualifier, Bangladesh outplayed Mongolia 3-0 to earn their lone victory in the just concluded meet. Bangladesh comparatively displayed a better show in the first leg after playing a goal-less draw with Vietnam and conceding 0-3 goals defeat to Asian giant and hosts Saudi Arabia. But they were whitewashed in the return-leg suffering 0-4 defeat against Vietnam and 0-6 defeat against Saudi Arabia. In the Tuesday’s last group match, Bangladesh went down by one goal in the 36th minute due to defense lapse, but restored parity in the 79th minute from a penalty kick taken by Sujon. Defender Sujon put Bangladesh ahead in the 82nd minute by a power-packed shot capitalizing on a corner kick by substitute Papel. But their joy was short-lived as Mongolia scored the equalizer few seconds before the final whistle. Bangladesh’s promising striker Rokonuzzaman Kanchan got marching order after receiving red card to reduce Bangladesh team to 10 men in the second half. Medio Iqbal Hossain was hospitalized following a shoulder injury. Later, he went back to his hotel after treatment. Bangladesh finished third in the four-team Asian group-10 securing five points from six matches. Bangladesh team, scheduled to fly for Makkah yesterday (Tuesday) to perform Omrah, will return home on Thursday. Bangladesh Team: Aminul, Rajani, Sujon, Tito, Nazrul, Hasan Al Mamun (Papel), Manwar, Motiur Munna, Iqbal (Kanchan), Moni, Amin Rana and Alfaz. |
