Dhaka--- The South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) has decided to hold the 3rd SAF Football Championship from October 25 this year in Bangladesh.

But the final schedule of the region’s biggest football tournament will depend on Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), said SAFF secretary Sirajul Islam Bachchu at a press briefing yesterday (Sunday) at the BNS conference room.

Bachchu, also joint-secretary of Bangladesh Football Federation, informed the newsmen that the decision was taken in the SAFF meeting on February 28 in Kuala Lumpur.

This is for the first time all seven South Asian countries are going to compete in the tourney as Bhutan achieved FIFA affiliation to join the six other member countries of SAAF.

Asian Marketing Limited (AML) continued their support making an agreement with South Asian Football Federation during the meeting in Kuala Lumpur to earn the tournament’s sponsor right.

The AML will provide 5 lakh dollars of which Bangladesh Football Federation will get 2 lakh dollars as tournament organiser while six participating countries other than hosts Bangladesh will get 25,000 dollars each.

A total of 90,000 dollars will be given as prize money of which the champions will receive 50,000 dollars, runners-up 25,000 dollars and third place winners 15,000 dollars.

A sum of 10,000 dollars will be used for coaching programmes, school tournaments and others in the member countries while 50,000 dollars for the SAFF secretariat.

Bachuchu accused few member countries of not cooperating in running the SAAF smoothly.

“The SAF Football is now very important for the region because Under-23 teams instead of national sides will now take part in the SAF Games,” he said.

Six countries took part in the February 28 meeting of SAFF in Kuala Lumpur as Pakistan did not turn up. The next meeting will be held in Singapore in May.
