LONDON-- (UNB/AP) - As England's new coach Sven-Goran Eriksson ruled himself out of three key World Cup qualifiers, the Football Association reappointed Peter Taylor to manage the side in a Feb. 28 friendly against Spain. The Leicester manager, who handled England earlier this month in a 1-0 loss against Italy in Turin, will pick the team but consult with Eriksson. The 52-year-old Swede is due to take over the English team when his contract expires on June 30 at the Italian club Lazio. Eriksson has faced calls to step down at Lazio, although club owner Sergio Cragnotti said he will not be fired as the team struggles to repeat its Serie A championship. In an interview with the Daily Mail, Eriksson said he would not be available to handle England for the next three World Cup qualifiers: March 24 vs. Finland, March 28 vs. Albania and June 6 vs. Greece. Asked if he would be coaching those games, he told the newspaper: "Well, I can tell you no. I will not. Absolutely. I don't wish that I was going to England straight away. I have a contract here which ends on June 30. A contract is to be respected." Eriksson signed a five-year contract to succeed Kevin Keegan, who resigned Oct. 7, minutes after a 1-0 defeat to Germany at Wembley in England's opening qualifier for the 2002 World Cup. England then played a scoreless tie at Finland. Taylor, who has held talks recently in Rome with Eriksson, will be assisted by Steve McLaren, the Manchester United assistant coach who was also on the touchline with Taylor in the match in Italy. "To manage your country is such an honor and Turin was a great experience," Taylor said. "Having met Sven, there is no doubt in my mind that we can look forward to enjoying a good working rapport." |
