Dhaka-- (UNB)– Abahani Limited, came from far behind, smartly established their claim to clinch the coveted trophy of the NBL Premier Division Football League shocking holders Mohammedan by 4-2 goals in a key super-three match yesterday (Tuesday).


The popular Dhanmondi outfit, having a distinction of winning five consecutive matches in the super league battle of elite to bag 36 points, now needs a win over Muktijoddha SKC in the unofficial final on Thursday to regain league crown.


However, the freedom fighters team Muktijoddha Sangsad, still leading the league table securing 38 points, requires just one point against Abahani in the remaining match to clinch the championship.


Thursday’s match will be a very important one for the sky-blue Abahani, which is now poised for winning all the major soccer trophies after lifting the national league and the federation cup.


Defending league champions Mohammedan SC, which have a comfortable lead of nine points over Abahani and one point over Muktijoddha in the middle of super-four stage, miserably finished third with 33 points collecting only 3 from last five matches.


In the day’s match, Abahani Limited dominated the first half by 2-1 goals at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in front of very poor crowd of nearly 6,000 for such a titans battle.


Ghanaian striker Kenney struck twice, Indian winger Sabbir Pasha & striker Kanchan scored one each for Abahani while striker Naquib and Alfaz netted for Mohammedan.


Abahani striker Kennedy, who beat Naquib (16 goals) of Mohammedan to become the highest scorer in the league with 17 individual goals including two goals of the day, was adjudged best player of the match to receive Tk 5000 prize money.


Incidentally, it was the biggest margin (4-2) victory for Abahani against their arch-rivals in the Dhaka league after their previous best 3-1 in a super-four match 10 days before.
