MELBOURNE (AP) - South Africa, minus two of its key players due to injuries, staged an amazing recovery Sunday to beat Australia by eight runs in the third and final limited-overs cricket international at Colonial Stadium.

It left the three-game series level at 1-1 after Friday night's tie. South Africa leads the two nations at 3-2 in one-dayers this year after winning the April home series 2-1.

Penalized two overs after the South African innings of 206-7 finished late, Australia reached 198-8 off its 48 overs.

South Africa went into the match without injured players Mark Boucher and Jonty Rhodes and was reeling at 19-4 after seven overs.

But a 108-run stand for the fifth wicket between Lance Klusener, who top-scored with 49, and Neil McKenzie (45) steadied the innings.

The tourists seemed unlikely to reach 200 at 150-7 in the 43rd over, but a quickfire 34 not out from captain Shaun Pollock and an unbeaten 28 from Nicky Boje added to the score.

Glenn McGrath, with 3-26 from 10 overs, and fellow speedster Brett Lee (3-56) were the pick of the Australian attack.

Despite a big-hitting 63 off 67 balls from opener Adam Gilchrist, Australia put itself under early pressure with a slow run rate.

Boje was named man of the match and man of the series after also taking 2-29 Sunday with his left-arm spin and snaring 2-33 on Friday night.

Michael Bevan managed 33 and Damien Martyn 31 for Australia.
