MELBOURNE (AP) - Michael Bevan and Steve Waugh scored Australian centuries Wednesday en route to a 94-run victory over South Africa as limited-overs cricket made its first appearance

indoors for an official series.

Waugh top-scored with 114 not out off 103 balls and Bevan made 106 from 125 as Australia reached 295-5 from its 50 overs. South Africa could only manage 201-7 in reply.

All-rounder Shane Lee had an eventful cameo after Bevan's dismissal, hitting 28 off 15 including the first two sixes at the indoor venue.

The first of three Super Challenge matches between the two sides was also the first official one-day international to be played under cover.

Bevan and Waugh stormed to a 222-run stand for the fourth wicket, coming together in the 12th over with Australia in trouble at 37-3.

Bevan is in strong form, having been the first player in English county cricket to amass 1,000 runs for the season for Sussex.

He and Waugh played chanceless knocks, with the only real scare a near run-out for the skipper in the 21st over when he was on 24 and the score 88-3.

Australia made a poor start when openers Adam Gilchrist and Mark Waugh and No. 3 Ricky Ponting all departed by the end of the 12th over.

Gilchrist went for one when he tested the outstanding fielding skills of Jonty Rhodes at backward point on a quick single.

Mark Waugh (17) and Ponting (16) fell to opening bowler Roger Telemachus in the same way, skying catches after trying to turn him to fine leg.

Telemachus was the pick of the South African attack with 2-54 off his 10 overs.
