KANDY, Sri Lanka (AP) - Marvan Atapattu scored his fifth test century Monday, as Sri Lanka took a seven-run lead with six first innings wickets in hand at stumps against South Africa.

Replying to South Africa's first innings score of 253 all out on the second day of the second test match, Sri Lanka was 260 for four with Atapattu batting on 107 and Arjuna Ranatunga on 34 at draw of stumps.

Atapattu faced 272 balls and hit 13 boundaries for his 107 and was involved in an unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 78 runs with Ranatunga.

Ranatunga faced 52 balls for his 34 scored off five boundaries and one six.

Resuming with the overnight score of 15 for no loss, Sri Lanka scored 99 for one wicket at lunch.

The home team had a safe and sedate start, making the runs in 37 overs before the lunch break.

South Africa's Mornantau Hayward and Shaun Pollock opened the bowling, but had no impact on Sri Lankan openers Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu.

In the eighth over of the day, Atapattu started to flow, driving Pollock straight down the ground for two boundaries.

Soon Jacques Kallis was brought into the attack.

But it was Hayward who claimed Jayasuriya, who was caught brilliantly by Jacques Kallis at the second slip.

With Jayasuriya flashing hard off the back foot, the ball flew quickly to the right of Kallis, who gobbled the catch on the second attempt. Jayasuriya scored 28 off 70 balls and hit four fours.

Russel Arnold came to the crease, a man desperate for serious runs in the innings. He got off the mark with a well timed clip off his legs to wide mid on. But Arnold was run out on 28 scored off 67 balls with three fours. Mahela Jayawardene did not stay long when he was caught by Darryl Cullinan off Nicky Boje for 18. Kumara Sangakkara, Sri Lanka's new find wicketkeeper cum batsman, was also run out. He scored 24.

The South Africans gave away 21 extras that included six no balls.

The wickets were shared by Hayward and Boje.
