COLOMBO (AP) - Sri Lanka inflicted a humiliating eight-wicket defeat on South Africa after bundling it out for a meager 167 runs in the triangular one-day series on Tuesday.

Opener Avishka Gunawardene and Marvan Atapattu punished the South African bowlers as they overhauled the victory target in the 28th over. Gunawardene scored 87 runs and Atapattu remained 44 not out.

South Africa will now clash with Pakistan on Wednesday to decide which team will challenge Sri Lanka in Friday's final.

Gunawardene plundered 87 runs off 75 deliveries, inclusive of 16 boundaries. Atapattu's 44 came off 62 balls with five fours.

The South Africans bowled poorly, yielding 22 extras, including eight wides. Although the pitch was flat, Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya's decision to ask South Africa to bat first after winning the toss paid off.

South Africa opened with Lance Klusener and Gary Kirsten, but both were dismissed with only four runs on the scoreboard. Klusener was caught in the covers on the first ball of the second over by Marvan Atapattu off Promodaya Wickramasinghe.

South Africa was zero for one and it never recovered from the setback. But the innings was saved from a total rout by Jacques Kallis who remained 83 not out off 148 balls. The other significant contribution came from Andrew Hall who made 32 off 34 deliveries.

Kallis was undeterred by the wickets falling at the other end. In the 12th over, he lifted Promodaya Wickramasinghe for two mighty sixes over square leg and long off. The over yielded 15 runs.

Hall also became aggressive and hit Zoysa to a square leg boundary. He hit another four, edging Wickramasinghe through the slips.

South Africa reached 37 for 2 after 10 overs and appeared to be overcoming early losses as Hall hit two fours off Nuwan Zoysa through point and extra cover regions.

But Hall didn't last long as Mahela Jayawardene caught him off Kumara Dharmasena at square leg. South Africa lost the third wicket for 64 runs.

Daryll Cullinan took the crease, but he ran himself out after scoring eight runs.  Sri Lanka met with yet another success when Jonty Rhodes was run out after scoring only five runs. South Africa thus lost half the side with only 94 runs on board.

South Africa suffered another blow when Mark Boucher offered an easy catch to Mahela Jayawardene at short cover point off Upul Chandana for eight.

In the same over, Shaun Pollock was adjudged leg before off Chandana for a duck. South Africa was seven wickets down for 110 runs.

In the midst of ruins, Kallis completed a defiant half-century. He carried on the fight but ran short of partners.
