Dhaka, May 31 (UNB)- An elegant century by Sourav Ganguly shaped an 8-wicket victory for India over hosts Bangladesh in the 7th Pepsi Asia Cup Cricket at the Bangabandhu National Stadium today (Wednesday).

 

The prince of Calcutta hammered an unbeaten 135 runs off 124 balls, which helped the former world champions to easily reach the target making 252 runs in 40.1 overs losing only two wickets.

 

The Indian captain was adjudged man of the match for his fiery batting performance with six boundaries and seven over boundaries to make his career’s 13th century, second in Dhaka.

 

The southpaw Bengali batsman, who opened his account with his trademark six over the mid-wicket against Mohammad Rafique, scored the tournament’s first century facing 104 balls.

 

The winning run also came from the captain’s willow hitting a boundary to the long-off against Mushfiqur Rahman Babu.

 

The other unbeaten batsman was Mohammed Azaharuddin, who has the record of playing highest number of one-day internationals, making 35 runs off 43 balls that featured four boundaries.

 

Amidst cloudy weather, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly made a flying start associating 85 runs in 11.1 overs dominating two opening bowlers -- pacer Monjurul Islam Monju and spinner Mohammed Rafique.

 

The debutante Mushfiqur Rahman took the prize wicket of Tendulkar, who gave a catch to Habibul Bashar Sumon at mid-wicket playing a miss-timed shot scoring a quick 36 runs off 25 balls.

 

India lost another wicket of debutante Hemang Badani, who scored 35 runs off 51 balls before being caught at cover by Aminul Islam Bulbul off left-arm spinner Enamul Haq Moni.

 

Mushfiqur Rahman Babu took one wicket giving away 59 runs in 9.1 overs while Enamul Haq Moni took the other conceding 28 runs in 5 overs.

 

Indian will take on defending champions Sri Lanka tomorrow (Thursday) at 2:30pm.

 

Earlier a swashbuckling 64-run by Akram Khan helped host Bangladesh put up a solid 249 for six in the rain-marred second match of the Pepsi Asia Cup cricket.

 

Bangladesh made its ever-highest total in the region’s prestigious tournament riding on a 103-run fifth wicket partnership between Akram Khan and Naimur Rahman Durjoy.

 

The earlier highest score was 210 against Pakistan in the 6th Asia Cup in Colombo.
