Dhaka, May 15 (UNB) – Kalabagan KC beat Abahani Limited by five runs in a thrilling last super league match of the Janakantha Premier Division Cricket at the Bangabandhu National Stadium today (Monday).

But the celebrated Dhanmondi outfit managed to regain the league title despite successive defeats in three previous super league matches. Last year, they lost the title to Bangladesh Biman, also by run rate.

Despite the day’s loss, Abahani captain, players, officials and supporters rushed in to the field to celebrate the championship, although shocked by the result.

Kalabagan players and officials looked very happy and celebrated the win in their dressing room.

After the day’s win, Kalabagan KC were equal on points (26), but far behind in net run rate with Abahani Limited (+1.19) and Kalabagan (+ 0.57).

The day’s victory confirmed the runners-up position for Kalabagan, their third in the league.

Although Abahani Limited failed to fully enjoy their 13th title, but a sensible 50-run knock by their late order batsman Zakir Hossain helped the last super league match to reach an exciting stage.

Pace bowler Zakir, included the squad as a batsman, proved his worth making team highest 50 off 61 balls before being run out when Abahani needed another 12 runs from 10 deliveries with one wicket in hand.

Abahani Limited, who missed the services of some vital players due to injury and were also deficient in foreign players, finished the stipulated 50 overs scoring 235 runs for nine wickets.

After losing seven wickets for 175 runs, Zakir and Iqbal Hossain took the match in favour of Abahani contributing 52 runs in the eighth wicket stand.

Iqbal returned to the pavilion scoring 18 runs off 29 balls, bowled by Pakistani leg spinner Rouf Wain who played a key role to destroy the Abahani’s winning hope.
