SYDNEY, JAN 6 (UNB/AP) - Michael Slater blazed a half century and withstood a barrage of short-pitched deliveries Saturday as Australia moved to within 19 runs of a 5-0 series sweep of the West Indies.

Slater and skipper Steve Waugh shared a 102-run fourth-wicket stand in 101 minutes to push Australia to 154 for four at lunch on the final day of the fifth cricket test.

Waugh, who was struck by successive balls from Nixon McLean after going to the crease at the dismissal of his twin brother Mark, was adjudged leg-before wicket to Marlon Samuels for 38 just before the break.

Slater remained unbeaten on 75 and No. 6 Ricky Ponting was 5 not out with two sessions remaining.

Resuming Saturday at 44 for two, the Australians had eight wickets in hand and required 129 runs to win at the Sydney Cricket Ground and clinch a 15th consecutive test triumph.

Mark Waugh (3) didn't add to his overnight score before he glided an easy catch to Jimmy Adams, fielding in the gully, off McLean's bowling in the second over.

With opener Matthew Hayden (5) and No. 3 Justin Langer (10) removed in the 10 overs between the close of the West Indies innings and stumps Friday, Mark Waugh's departure made the score a precarious 46 for three.

But Steve Waugh, who stroked his second century in as many tests with his 103 in Australia's 452-run first innings, steadied with Slater to propel the hosts toward victory.

Slater, who reached his 20th career test half century off 89 balls, gave the West Indies a half chance when he smashed a return catch to McLean when on 25, but the fast bowler could not grasp a difficult chance.

Australia dismissed the tourists for 272 in the first innings and then, grabbing a 180-run lead in reply, bowled them out again for 352 in the second innings late on the penultimate day of the series finale.
