Dhaka-- (Bangla2000 news-desk) –Could you imagine? Bangladesh did what wasn't even been done by the powerful West Indies, Australia, England, South Africa, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka or New Zealand.

They, the Bangladesh cricket team, scored 400 runs in their inaugural test match.

Aminul Islam Bulbul exalted the nation displaying a glorious resolve to prove his brilliance and write his name in the record book as the first ton maker of Bangladesh in test cricket here yesterday (Saturday).

Riding on his heroic marathon 9-hour innings of 145 runs, test babes Bangladesh posted mammoth 400 runs for all in 153.3 overs on the second day of their first innings in the inaugural test against giant India at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.

With the huge score - beyond expectations of the players, experts and millions of fans, Bangladesh brightened the chance to force India to a draw in the five-day Dutch-Bangla test match.

The 10th test playing nation now stands as the second highest scorer in debut test after the ninth member of the elite test club, Zimbabwe, who scored 456, also against India in 1992-93.

Resuming with overnight score of 239 for 6, the newcomers have also glorified the local cricket on the second day with sensible batting in the one-off test.

The second day’s bails were drawn with India scoring 81 runs in 26 overs losing their debutante opener Shivsundar Das, who made 29 off 67 balls with four boundaries.

Bangladesh captain Naimur Rahman Durjoy made the breakthrough for the home side when his off-spin broke the stumps with a big turn befooling the right-handed Indian opener who decided to leave the ball thinking it will pass outside the off-stump.

Another opener, left-handed Sadagopan Ramesh and night watchman Murali Kartik were batting with 40 and 7 runs respectively when the play was called off for the day.

Thirty-two-year-old Aminul Islam Bulbul, the most experienced cricketer of the country, became a national hero yesterday with his test century after a long drought of runs, which even created whispers about his possible departure from the national squad.

”So far, it’s the best innings of my cricket career and I’m very, very happy,” he said after his dream innings.

The right-handed top order batsman is the 67th player to score a century on test debut and the third to score a hundred in his country's maiden test.

Charles Bannerman made 165 for Australia against England in the first of all tests in 1877, and David Houghton scored 121 for Zimbabwe in their debut test against India in 1992.

It was a tenacious performance for Bulbul, the recent past national captain, who came to the crease Friday morning in the 18th over of the match with the Bangladesh score on 44 for 2.

He took 256 minutes to bring up his half-century late Friday afternoon and remained not out at 70 after day one.

The dapper right-handed batsman looked confident as he made a superb cover drive to the ropes against strike bowler Javagal Srinath in the first delivery of the new ball in the second over yesterday (Saturday).

And again in the third over, he brilliantly hooked a bouncer from left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan that passed the boundary line to bring the team’s 250 runs.

After being stranded on 88 for 21 deliveries, and then spending two overs on 99 without the strike, Bulbul brought up his historic hundred with a sweep shot off left-arm spinner Murali Kartik.

His hundred with patience, dedication and grit - what test batsmanship is all about - was scored off 282 balls in 389 minutes, and included 13 fours in his marathon innings.

Bulbul, however, perished at his 145 just before tea, but by that time Bangladesh already advanced to an impressive 385 for 9.

The glittering right-handed batsman later said he was dismissed by a very good slow delivery by pacer Ajit Agarkar and he failed to read the ball offering a simple catch to Srinath at mid-on.

The two overnight unbeaten batsmen Bulbul and Khaled Masud Pilot defied the Indian attack till lunch adding 63 runs in the first session without losing any wicket.

Left-arm pacer Sunil Joshi gave the much-desired break to the Indian side as the 93-run highest partnership in Bangladesh innings came to an end when Pilot was caught at forward short leg by Shivsundar Das.

In his nearly three-hour innings, the Bangladesh wicket keeper faced 121 balls to make 32 runs with one boundary.

After Pilot’s dismissal, Mohammed Rafique joined century-maker Bulbul amidst a big applause by the crowd in the big bowl.

The left-handed batsman soon began to prove his worth as a dashing batsman as he smashed Sunil Joshi to score 22 runs off 29 deliveries. He played his first six against Joshi over the long on after hitting a four with cover drive and another six over the side screen before caught by Shivsundar Das off Sachin Tendulkar.

Sunil Joshi finished his career best bowling with 5 for 142 in 45.5 overs dismissing Bangladesh’s last batsman Bikas Rajan Das who scored 2 runs off 26 balls.

Hasibul Hossain Shanta made unbeaten 28 off 45 balls with a six over the mid-wicket against Murali Kartik, who bowled 24 overs giving 41 runs without success.

Indian strike bowler Javagal Srinath, who took to the field after a long rest, bowled only seven overs in one spell and finished with 22-9-47-0.

Promising left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan returned a bowling figure of 21-6-49-2 and Ajit Agarkar 31-13-68-2.
