International Master (IM) Reefat-bin-Sattar of Biman earned a solo lead in the Professor Abdur Razzak 26th National Chess Championship with an easy win over Abul Kashem Bhuiyan of Titas Club in the fourth round at the NSC chess room last night.

Playing with white pieces against the Thillidor defence of Kashem, the highest rated player in the country, forced his opponent into submission after 24 moves.

 

It raised his tally to a maximum four points.

Mainuddin Ahmed of Chittagong, who shared the lead along with Reefat going into the round, lost to Dewan Shahidul Amin Tipu of Kamalapur Samaj Kalyan Sangha.

Tipu made a king-pawn opening and won the board after 36 moves.

IM Ziaur stole a march on Mainuddin by beating Saifuddin Lovlu of Titas Club. He is half-a-point behind the leader.

Playing with black pieces, Zia adopted Dutch defence and won after a marathon spell of 57 moves.

Abu Sufian Shakil of Ansars upset IM Abdullah Al-Rakib.

Playing with whites against the Carocan defence of Rakib, Shakil took only 20 moves to force a checkmate.

In other matches, Tayebur Rahman Sumon of BUET beat Shawkat Hossain Pallab of Ansars while Ruhul Kabir Shiplu of Titas Club managed a draw with Monir Hossain of Leonine Chess Club.

Standings: 4 points--Reefat, 3.5 points--Zia, 3 points--Mainuddin and Shakil, 2.5 points--Sumon, Rakib and Monir, 2 points--Rajib (3 games), 1.5 points--Shiplu, 1 point--Arif, Pallab and Lovlu.

Today's matches: Reefat v Nasir, Zia v Rajib, Amin v Lovlu, Rakib v Arif, Monir v Shakil, Mainuddin v Shiplu, Pallab v Tipu and Kashem v Sumon.
