Dhaka- -- Estonian Grandmaster Jaan Ehlvest emerged champion of the 5th United Insurance Grandmasters’ Chess Tournament eliminating Russian Grandmaster Alexandar Volzhin in a tie-breaking here yesterday (Saturday).

Earlier, Ehlvest beat International Master Tahir of Uzbekistan in the last round at the NSC conference room yesterday to finish joint top with Volzhin, who shared point with Latvian Grand Master Igors Rausis in the final round. 

Both Ehlvest and Volzhin secured 8.5 points, but the Estonia GM took the title in tiebreaker for his highest number of wins in the tournament while Volzhin finished runner-up. 

In the final roud match, Ehlvest played with black against the English opening of Tahir and won in the 27th move to receive US$1,550 in prize money. Volzhin also played with black in a Queen’s gambit accepted and agreed to a draw in the 24th move against Rausis. The Russian GM also got $1,550. 

Normunds Miezis, the Latvian Grandmaster, gained third position securing eight points. He defeated local International Master Ziaur Rahman playing with white in English Opening and won in the 28th move. Normuds secured $700. 

Bangladesh’s lone Grandmaster Niaz Murshed improved his rating after finishing fourth in the tournament as the local GM beat Indian International Master Gurushwami Gurunatahan in the last round to secure 7.5. Niaz got $300.

Four players — Tahir, Barsov, English Grandmaster Nigel Davies and International Master Reefat Bin Sattar — finished with seven points each to receive $250. 

Remaining standings: Tahir (5th), Barsov (6th), Nigel (7th), Reefat (8th), Rausis (9th, 6 points), Rakib (10th, 5 points), Gurushwami (11th, 5.5 points), Zia (12th, 5 points), Rajib (13th, 5 points) and Sandipan (14th, 5 points).

Fourteen players, including seven Grandmasters, six International Masters and one FIDE Master took part in the round robin-league basis tournament.
