Dhaka-- - Grandmaster Alexandar Volzhin of Russia maintained his solo lead in the 5th United Insurance Grandmasters Chess tournament securing 6.5 points after the 9th round matches at the conference room of National Sports Council yesterday (Tuesday).
In his 8th round match, Volzhin drew with IM Abdullah Al Rakib of Bangladesh. Rakib played with black to take slave defense and agreed for a draw after 13 moves.
GM Jaan Ehlvest of Estonia now in the second position with 5.5 points while four other players --GM Niaz Murshed, IM Reefat Bin Sattar, GM Nigel Davies and IM Vakhidov Tahir - are in the 3rd position having 5 points each.
In the day’s round, Ehlvest beat GM Alexie Barsov, Niaz beat second seeded GM Normunds Miezis of Latvia, Reefat beat GM Igors Rausis of Latvia while Tahir drew with IM Ziaur Rahman.
Ehlvest played with white against French defense of Barsov and won after the 36th move. Niaz played with white against Miezis and won the match after 73 moves. Reefat played with black to take English defense and won after 40 moves.
Zia played with black to take French Defense against Taras variation of Tahir. The game ended in a draw in the 27th move. FM Enamul Hossain Rajib drew with GM Nigel Davies of England. Rajib played black against English opening of Davies and drew after 30 moves. Indian IM GB Prakash won against his compatriot IM Sandipan Chanda. Prakash played with black to take French defense and won after 68 moves.
Standings after the 9th round: 6.5- Volzhin; 5.5-Ehlvest; 5.0 - Niaz, Reefat, Davies, Tahir; 4.5 - Miezis, Barsov, Prakash; 4.0 - Rausis, Rajib, Rakib;
3.5 -Zia and 2.0 - Sandipan.
The 10th round matches will be held today (Wednesday) from 2:30pm at the same venue.
